Tank Recharge Rates

Recharge rates for use of tanks at CABA Facilities

These rates will be effective beginning July 1, 2012.

CABA has designed a recharge rate system to assist the program in facility maintenance and upkeep. These rates are subject to change.  All researchers will be billed for tank use at CABA facilities on a monthly basis. The recharge rate is determined by the total volume of the tank regardless of water level in the tank.

In general, tanks are allocated on the following basis:  First funded (with an approved Animal Use and Care protocol), first served.  However, priority will be given to accommodating fish in active research experiments; fish being housed for future use will be given lower priority.  As a result, fish may need to be moved to different tanks or differently sized tanks periodically in order to accommodate new experiments.
Given the number of researchers and projects making use of the CABA Facility, CABA cannot guarantee that the exact number and size of tanks requested will be available for all projects at all times.  Furthermore, the full charge of a given tank size applies, regardless of the volume of the tank filled with water, or the number or biomass of fish housed.  Due to changes in fish growth and condition over time, we cannot reassess the cost of tanks based on a percent occupation basis.  We encourage researchers to work with CABA staff to ensure the most equitable distribution of resources.  We also encourage researchers to develop their budgets taking into account the uncertainty of tank availability, and the probable need to transfer fish from smaller to larger tanks as they grow.
