CABA provides support for the specialized units listed below:
  • The Aquatic Toxicology unit is currently active in several projects including the mechanisms of specific environmental toxins such as androgenic and estrogenic steroids, diethylnitrosamine, and heavy metals.
  • The Finfish Reproduction Group, supervised by Dr. Serge Doroshov, is known for their work on white sturgeon broodstock development.
  • The Finfish Physiological Ecology Unit, directed by Dr. Joseph Cech, is engaged in research projects involving many of the state's threatened and endangered species, as well as its shrinking water resources.
  • Dr. Raul Piedrahita oversees the Aquacultural Systems Engineering and Water Quality Unit where the development of procedures and hardware for monitoring and treating water in aquaculture, and the creation of computer models of aquaculture production systems takes place.
  • The Infectious Fish Disease Laboratory, supervised by Dr. Ronald Hedrick, investigates the pathogenesis of microbial diseases, characterization of causative agents, and develops approaches to health management in aquaculture and fisheries.
  • Marine organisms are studies at the Bodega Marine Laboratory where faculty members participate in CABA research activities. Some of the major projects are genetics and broodstock development of farmed oysters and endangered chinook salmon (Dr. Dennis Hedgecock), invertebrate endocrinology and physiology (Dr. Ernest Chang), population biology and fisheries of sea urchin, crab and salmon (Dr. Louis Botsford), and marine fish and shellfish diseases (Dr. Carolyn Friedman).
Most of the projects supported by CABA are funded extramurally by various agencies including Sea Grant, Western Regional Aquaculture Centers, National Science Foundation, US Department of Agriculture, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and CALFED.
